When i was a kid i used to have a night light, not because i was afraid of the dark or anything but because it was a teenage mutant ninja turtle's one which was my favourite show at the time! It never really did anything to make the room a great deal brighter, it just looked cool with its low glow in the dark.

You have to really go with how the child reacts to sleeping in the dark, or if there is a light on. It's their decision as to whether they are comfortable either way.

Night lights come in all shapes and sizes and can have certain calming or educational features which help children get to sleep, or at least take their mind off the dark.

Yes, i used a night light as long as my baby was still getting midnight feedings. I used it mostly for me, so i could see what i was doing when i went to her without having to turn on the light. Once she started sleeping through the night i stopped using the night light. My MIL said that babies need darkness for their growth and development. I don't know if it is true or not, but since my daughter doesn't mind the dark, i figure i can save the electricity! lol. She's only 19 months now, so we may need to use one when she gets older.

A night light is fine. My son is scared of the dark. Yes he was scared of the dark from birth. Never liked it dark. Cried when it was and wouldn't sleep. So I use a small night light just bright enough so he can see the things around him. He finds comfort in this. The only thing I've heard about brain development and the dark is that you feel more rested if it is completely dark. That's all. Good Luck.

I dont think its necessarry, my baby can sleep in the dark and is fine. My brothers baby has always had a light on and cant sleep without one on, recently they had a power outage and the baby started screaming and wouldnt go to sleep.

My kids are older now, but I did have a night light in their nursery room so that I could sneak in to check on them without turning on the overhead light and over stimulating them, making it hard to get them back to sleep.

When they were older we had a night light in the hallway so they could see to go to the bathroom but all three of them actually preferred their bedrooms dark and quiet for sleeping. We never let them get into the habit of sleeping with lights or televisions on and they chose not to have night lights.

Incidentally, my oldest has won scholarships to college and my two younger children in high school are honor students. I really don't think the night lights... or lack thereof.. had a measurable impact on their brain development. Do what you think is best.
